How Does an Automatic Standby Generator Work?

The entire process happens automatically.

  1. Utility power is lost.

  2. The automatic transfer switch detects the outage.

  3. The transfer switch sends a start signal to the generator.

  4. The generator starts and reaches normal operating speed.

  5. The transfer switch safely transfers your electrical system to generator power.

  6. When utility power returns, the transfer switch reconnects your home or business to the utility.

  7. The generator runs briefly to cool down before automatically shutting off.

Depending on the generator model and fuel type, the entire process typically takes 10–20 seconds.

Fuel Options

Automatic standby generators are commonly fueled by either natural gas or propane.

Natural Gas

Generator Location

The generator is installed outdoors inside a weather-resistant enclosure.

Manufacturers specify minimum clearances around the unit to ensure safe operation and proper airflow. Keeping shrubs, landscaping, snow, and debris away from the generator helps maintain adequate cooling and reliable operation.

Foundation

Generators are typically installed on either:

  • A poured concrete pad

  • A manufacturer-approved precast concrete pad

Both require a properly prepared gravel base to minimize settling over time.

Electrical Connections

Electrical conduit is installed between the generator and the automatic transfer switch, and in most cases trenching is required.

What Happens During Installation?

"Will my power be off while the generator is installed?"

Yes, but usually for a much shorter time than people expect.

We try to install as much of the equipment as possible before disconnecting your electrical service. This minimizes the amount of time your home or business is without power.

For customers with critical equipment such as refrigerators, freezers, sump pumps, or networking equipment or other equipment that cannot be without power for extended times, we can discuss temporary power options before installation begins.

Our goal is to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Maintenance Requirements

Like any engine, standby generators require regular maintenance to ensure reliable operation.

Annual maintenance typically includes:

  • Engine oil and filter changes

  • Air filter inspection or replacement

  • Battery inspection

  • Cooling airflow inspection

  • Visual inspection for rodent damage or debris

  • Automatic transfer switch inspection and testing

Manufacturers offer maintenance kits that include many of the required service items.

If you'd rather not perform the maintenance yourself, we'd be happy to schedule annual service.

Automatic Self-Testing

Most standby generators automatically perform a scheduled exercise cycle on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis.

During this test, the generator starts and checks its operating systems to verify it is ready for service.

Depending on the programming, the transfer switch may or may not actually transfer your home onto generator power during the exercise cycle.

We still recommend performing a complete operational test at least on an annual basis to verify that the generator and transfer switch are functioning properly.
